Wooden Wick Candle Care

Carrie Rendall

If used correctly our candles will provide you with a beautiful clean burn – here are some tips to help you with this as soy wax performs differently to more commonly used paraffin wax and wooden wicks perform differently to standard cotton wicks.

  • The first time you light the candle let it burn until the wax has melted edge to edge, failure to do so will result in your candle tunnelling. This could take up to three hours.
  • Due to the nature of soy wax, light your candle for no longer than 4 hrs at a time. Once extinguished the scent will still linger. Keeping soy candles lit for too long can burn off all the fragrance and/or wax too quickly. Once you finish burning your candle place the lid back on to keep the scent locked in.
  • TRIM YOUR WICK  - Trimming wood wicks between burns is very important to ensure optimum burn performance and to avoid possible sooting, which too much charred wood can create. Your flame will also be at the perfect height, not too high and not too low that it may extinguish. Finally trimming your wick will also give a better crackle! Optimal wick length should be around 5mm. You can trim your wick by carefully snapping the charred wood off with your fingers (make sure it is cool before you do so!)
  • Soy wax candles burn slower and are more temperature sensitive than paraffin candles. Your burn rate and candle characteristics might be different depending on the temperature of the room you burn it in.
  • Soy wax tends to have a 'rustic' look after the melt pool has cooled. This is due to the natural makeup of the wax and in no way affects the way your candle will burn. It is a sign its 100% natural!
  • Please note our candles are all hand poured, not mass produced. Although all effort is made to ensure consistency, every candle will be different. Sometimes the top of the candle may appear slightly uneven, this is a sign of natural soy wax and will not affect the quality of the candle.

Candle Safety

The following guidelines apply to the burning of all candles.

  • Never leave a burning candle unattended.
  • Keep burning candles away from flammable materials, children and pets.
  • Do not place candles on or near other heat sources.
  • Burn the candles on flat, heat resistant surfaces.
  • Extinguish candles with great care ensuring that hot wax does not splatter.
  • Keep the hot wax pool free of wick trimmings, matches or any other flammable materials.
  • Do not move candle when burning or when the wax is still hot
  • Position them away from curtains or other fabrics – or furniture.
  • Keep clothes and hair away from burning candles.
  • Keep them out of draughts.
  • Do not burn for longer than 4 hours at one time
  • Discard when 1/2” wax remains
